Inside the UAE’s First Social Media Report: Grafdom’s Top 100 Brands and What the 2011 Rankings Reveal

Long before today’s always-on social feeds, the UAE was already building a vibrant social media scene. In 2011, Grafdom captured that moment with the region’s first Social Media Brands Index—an ambitious snapshot of who was truly cutting through the noise online and why it mattered. Whether you’re benchmarking historical performance, teaching digital literacy, or shaping your brand’s strategy, the insights below show how early platform choices and authentic engagement set leaders apart.

Release Summary: UAE’s First Social Media Brands Index (2011)

Grafdom, the UAE’s fastest-growing digital media agency at the time, released results for the region’s first-ever Social Media Brands Index. The study comprises a listing of the UAE’s 100 most influential corporate brands and individuals on social networks.

The report’s ranking methodology was determined by a brand’s number of followers on Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube. To qualify, a brand needed to maintain a position within the top five of its category and be active on at least two social networks. Conducted in March, the study also revealed standout performance in some industries compared with others. Overwhelmingly, brands that engaged with their audiences on multiple social platforms and nurtured two-way dialogue excelled in their fields.

Key statistics from the report:

  • Most active category: Communications & Technology
  • Least active category: Real Estate
  • Brand with the most followers: National Geographic Abu Dhabi
  • Social network with the most followers: Facebook (72%)
  • Facebook users in the UAE: 2,054,520
  • Twitter users in the UAE: 36,841
  • Total followers of the 100 brands: 990,905

“This study has been an invaluable resource to us and we hope its findings will be of great benefit to others in the marketing field. The results reaffirm the role social media has grown to play in the corporate sector. Brands that were unheard of just a few years back currently maintain a loyal following on social networks and are equipped to drive substantial business gains through it,” said Farid Gasim, Director of Operations at Grafdom. “We found that organizations are dedicating greater budgetary resources into marketing their brands on social networks and are committed to maintaining a sustained presence.”

  • Emirates Airlines
  • Sony ME
  • The Dubai Mall
  • Etisalat

“We shall continue sharing our industry know-how in forthcoming studies and carry on with subsequent annual reports covering the social media and digital technology landscape,” added Farid. “Ultimately, our aim is to gauge the quality of online interaction, quantify the level of user engagement, and monitor its impact on businesses.”

How the Social Media Brands Index Was Compiled

Understanding how influence was measured helps you interpret the results and apply them responsibly.

  • Snapshot timing: Rankings reflect follower counts captured in March 2011.
  • Eligibility rules: Brands needed to rank within the top five of their vertical category and be present on at least two of Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
  • Primary metric: Total follower counts on the included platforms determined rank order.
  • Engagement lens: While the primary metric was audience size, qualitative observations emphasized that two-way dialogue and consistent, cross-platform activity were common traits among leaders.

Note: Follower counts offer a clear gauge of reach, but they do not by themselves capture sentiment, content quality, or conversion. Treat this index as a reach benchmark complemented by engagement insights.

What the Numbers Reveal

  • Facebook’s dominance shaped early brand reach With 72% of tracked followers, Facebook was the dominant channel for UAE audiences at the time. For brands, that meant a strong Facebook presence was essential for scale, while Twitter and YouTube provided complementary reach and real-time or video-led storytelling.
  • Category leaders leaned into tech, conversation, and consistency Communications & Technology emerged as the most active category, likely reflecting a natural alignment with early-adopter audiences and product-led content. Real Estate, by contrast, lagged—an early signal that sectors with longer sales cycles or offline-heavy journeys needed distinct content strategies to compete for attention online.
  • Audience size mattered, but dialogue separated the best from the rest Beyond raw followers, the strongest performers cultivated multi-platform communities and responded to their audiences. The study underscores a foundational truth that still holds: social isn’t a broadcast channel—it’s a relationship engine.
  • Top 10 Most Influential UAE Social Profiles in 2011 Here are the leaders that defined the UAE’s early social media landscape, with brief context on why they resonated with audiences.
  • National Geographic Abu Dhabi — Visual storytelling, educational value, and broad regional appeal fueled standout growth across platforms.
  • Emirates Airlines — Consistently engaging content spanning travel inspiration, service updates, and global brand moments.
  • Sony ME — Product launches and tech tips aligned with a digitally savvy audience eager for innovation.
  • The Dubai Mall — A steady stream of retail, entertainment, and event highlights made it a community hub online and off.
  • Etisalat — Telecom updates and customer support at scale put service and utility at the heart of content.
  • Sultan Al Qassemi — A trusted individual voice demonstrating the power of timely, informed commentary.
  • Burger King UAE — Offers and playful brand tone built frequency and familiarity with everyday consumers.
  • Atlantis Dubai — Iconic experiences and striking visuals translated naturally to social virality.
  • Virgin Radio Dubai — Real-time entertainment, personalities, and listener interaction drove loyalty.
  • TimeOut Dubai — Curated city life, events, and recommendations made it a go-to cultural guide.

How to Apply These Insights to Your Brand Today

  • Be truly multi-platform: Meet your audience where they are, and tailor the story format—snackable for feeds, deeper for video, conversational for real-time channels.
  • Design for two-way engagement: Prompt replies, polls, Q&As, and user-generated content to turn passive followers into active participants.
  • Balance reach and resonance: Track both audience growth and meaningful interactions (saves, shares, comments, completion rates) to see what’s working.
  • Program around moments: Product drops, cultural events, and seasonal needs create natural peaks—plan recurring content to sustain momentum in between.
  • Resource for consistency: The study’s leaders invested in sustained presence; set a cadence you can keep and build quality over time.

Limitations and Notes on the 2011 Methodology

  • Follower counts reflect reach, not sentiment or conversion; layer in engagement and outcomes for a fuller picture.
  • Platform mix has evolved since 2011; adapt lessons on community and consistency to today’s channels without assuming identical behavior.
  • Category differences matter; some sectors need more education, service content, or offline integration to convert attention into action.
